Applied Behavioral Analysis Classroom for Preschoolers with Autism
Finding effective methods of education for a child with an autism spectrum disorder can be a challenge for parents and teachers alike. Although many approaches have been proposed, Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) programming has been rigorously and scientifically researched. According to the U.S. Surgeon General’s Report on Mental Health, there is empirical support for ABA as an effective treatment for children with autism.
The principles of ABA look at the function behind behavioral issues and create a structured environment in which the child can learn. Socially significant skills are developed through direct instruction, small group instruction, and natural learning opportunities.
Services
Enable has created additional classroom space devoted to ABA programming at Exploring Your World, our inclusive preschool program.
In the classroom environment, the children with autism participate in preschool activities alongside their typical peers. It is an active five-hour day during which the critical skills of social interaction, functional communication, group participation, toy play, following routines, coping with frustrations and other self-help skills are practiced. Children enrolled in the program benefit from an almost 2:1 ratio of students to teachers, receiving personal attention from the staff members that run the extended-day classroom.
The class is taught by a special education teacher who is board-certified in ABA (BCBA) along with other qualified teachers and aides. Each child has a highly individualized program which the special education teacher oversees.
