individualized services for children and adults with disabilities

Agency Overview

Since 1948, our mission has been to enable people with disabilities to participate fully in all aspects of life. We provide assessment, training, therapy and support for nearly 2,000 children and adults with disabilities and their families annually. Enable empowers people with disabilities to achieve their goals at home, school, work, and play. Enable, also known as the United Cerebral Palsy and Handicapped Children's Association of Syracuse, Inc., is a member of the United Way of Greater Oswego County. We are also an affiliate of Cerebral Palsy Associations of NYS and a member of the Associations for Persons in Supported Employment (APSE).

Comprehensive Clinical Services:
Enable can help children who might have disabilities. After an evaluation, different needs such as medical, educational, and respite may be identified. Individual, family and group counseling is available. A variety of speech, occupational and physical therapy services are offered, including aquatics (water therapy for children and adults).

Education Services:
Enable offers Early Intervention and Inclusive Preschool services for children with disabilities ages birth through five years. Special education services are given at home or in community preschools and child care centers. Support groups are available for parents and siblings.

Communication and Assistive Technology Services:
Many people with disabilities are unable to use speech. Writing is also difficult for some people. Enable helps children and adults with a variety of disabilities to communicate better through augmentative communication devices and other technology. We offer evaluations, therapy and training and have an array of equipment available.

Community Services:
Through supported employment, Enable helps people with disabilities find a job that meets the needs of the individual and the employer. Enable's transition services helps students, their families and school districts make the change from high school to adult life.

Enable helps people with disabilities and their families by coordinating their services.
Individuals who are enrolled in the Home & Community-Based Waiver can choose day habilitation to improve job and social skills.

Enable assists adults with disabilities with their housing needs and offers different options for living arrangements. Group living services, where three to five people with disabilities live together, provides twenty-four hour supervision.

Self-Directed Personal Services:
Enable's Self-Directed Personal Services (SDPS) program helps people take control of their assistance services. SDPS participants screen, interview, hire, train, supervise and dismiss their personal assistants.
