Since 1948, our mission has been to enhance the quality of life for people with developmental or physical disabilities through an array of services. We provide assessment, training, therapy and support for over 1,500 children and adults with disabilities and their families annually. Enable empowers people with disabilities to achieve their goals at home, school, work, and play.
Enable, also known as the United Cerebral Palsy and Handicapped Children's Association of Syracuse, Inc., is a member of the United Way of Greater Oswego County. We are also an affiliate of the Cerebral Palsy Associations of NYS and a member of the Associations for Persons in Supported Employment (APSE).
Comprehensive Clinical Services
Through our Clinical Services program we provide outpatient services to children and adults with a variety of disabilities. Clinical services are diverse and include traditional occupational, physical and speech/language therapy, as well as newer programs such as sensory integration. The assistive technology component of our clinic offers evaluations, trainings and follow-up support for augmentative and alternative communication systems.
Our Education Services program offers inclusive education and therapy services to children with disabilities who participate in preschool activities along side their typical peers. Enable therapists and preschool staff work together in the classroom to address the needs of all children in the program.
Community Services is our largest program area offering supported employment, residential supports, service coordination and habilitation services primarily for people with developmental disabilities. Enable group homes are neighborhood–based, providing the residents with the opportunity to be included as a part of that neighborhood. The outreach component supports individuals with disabilities to function as independently as possible in their own home by providing adaptive equipment, environmental modifications and other supports. Outreach services have been developed to address gaps in service where traditional programs are unable to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities.
Self-Directed Personal Services
Self-Directed Personal Services is a personal assistance program administered through Onondaga County that allows participants to hire, train, supervise and dismiss their own assistants if necessary. Enable acts as a fiscal intermediary, facilitating the hiring process and payroll. The program serves individuals of all ages with all types of disabilities.
